Offshore vs nearshore development: the comparison with numbers in it

Short answer: offshore buys the lowest rate and pays for it in latency; nearshore buys overlapping hours at a middle rate; onshore buys everything at three to four times the price.

Definitions

Three words people use loosely

The decision is rarely about the hourly rate — it is about how much rework your process generates when a question takes a day to answer.

Onshore — same country. Nearshore — a nearby country with an overlapping working day: for Western Europe that is the Balkans, the Baltics and Iberia; for the US it is Latin America, and increasingly Eastern Europe for teams that keep US-morning hours. Offshore — a far time zone, typically eight to twelve hours apart.

Rates are market observations for 2026, not quotes. Ours are published: $28–55 by role. Onshore for comparison: $90–160 per senior hour.

Hidden costs

Where the money actually goes

Five line items that never appear in a quote and decide the real cost of an engagement.

Latency compounding

One blocking question a day, answered tomorrow, costs about a week per month. Nothing in the invoice shows it.

Rework from misread requirements

The most expensive item in offshore engagements, and the one nobody quotes. Specs written for a team you cannot ask questions of have to be perfect — and never are.

Management overhead you now own

Someone on your side writes specs in more detail and reviews more carefully. That person costs onshore money.

Turnover and incident timing

Cheap markets churn, so onboarding repeats. And production breaks in your afternoon, when the team is asleep.

Decision

Which one is right for you

Answer five questions honestly and the choice usually makes itself.

The checklist

1. How many decisions per week does this project need from your side?
2. Who writes the acceptance criteria — you or the vendor?
3. What breaks if a question waits eighteen hours?
4. Does the work touch personal data with residency constraints?
5. Is the rate difference bigger than your expected rework?

If the first three answers are "a lot / them / a lot", nearshore usually wins on total cost even at a higher hourly rate.

Where we sit

We are nearshore for Europe and the UK — Belgrade, CET, full overlap — and an overlapping-offshore option for the US with 4–6 hours against the East Coast, at $28–55 by role with senior review inside the price.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers, because this is a comparison page and not a sales page.

What is offshore outsourcing?

Contracting software work to a team in a distant country, usually eight to twelve hours away, chosen primarily for cost.

What is the difference between nearshore and offshore?

Overlap of working hours. Nearshore keeps your working day; offshore trades it for a lower rate.

Is nearshore always more expensive?

Per hour, usually. Per delivered feature, often not — that is what the rework column captures.

Which is safer for IP?

The one with an enforceable contract and a documented chain of title, regardless of distance. Ask for both before signing anything.

Can one vendor be both?

Yes: a European team keeping US-morning hours is offshore by distance and nearshore by schedule. That is our model, and we price it as one thing.
