Getting off .NET Framework without a big-bang project

The part that is specific to this stack rather than true of every project.

The migration order matters more than the tooling: inventory the dependency tree, get characterisation tests around the flows that carry money, move projects one at a time, then replace what has no modern equivalent — usually WCF services and WebForms pages. Containerisation comes last, once the code no longer needs Windows-only APIs.

What usually breaks is predictable: System.Web dependencies, third-party components with no modern build, and anything tied to the Windows API surface. We find those in the audit and price them separately rather than discovering them mid-migration. Sometimes the honest answer is to leave a module on Framework behind a modern facade — and we will say that too.
